Why You Need to Create a Coaching Culture in Your Organisation

How much time are the leaders in your organisation spending coaching their team members?

Whether the answer is 1 hour a week or 10 hours a week the true answer is likely to be ‘not enough’.

Coaching can have three purposes, these being skills, performance or developmental and more often than not in many organisations the focus still tends to be on performance coaching.

If more time was spent with team members helping them increase skills and capabilities or focus on long term development, then the performance coaching would be required much less.

“I absolutely believe that people, unless coached, never reach their maximum capabilities.” Bob Nardelli

A coaching culture in an organisation is about delivering the right results, improving performance and maximising the most important resource, your people and their potential.

“The goal of coaching is the goal of good management: to make the most of an organization’s valuable resources.” Harvard Business Review

It’s not just about empowering your leaders and improving their capability to coach but also creating the right environment and enabling your team members to receive coaching – take it onboard, learn from it and act on it.

Organisations invest a lot of time and money focusing on developing leaders as coaches but often fail to think about those receiving the coaching and how they can better take feedback onboard and see it as a positive.  To create a true coaching culture in an organisation there should be a focus on everyone being able to coach and provide feedback as well as helping everyone better receive this.

Mutual trust needs to be established between the team member and their leader with the ultimate goal being a two-way loop where the team member is comfortable in providing feedback to their leader as well as receiving coaching guidance and support from them.

By creating a coaching culture and the two-way conversation between leaders and their teams’, organisations have seen significant improvements in both financial productivity and employee engagement.

An International Coaching Federation (ICF) survey found that the following benefits were seen in organisations with a strong coaching culture.

1. Highly engaged employees

In organisations with a strong coaching culture 60% of employees rated as highly engaged compared to 48% of all other organisations.

2. Higher revenue growth

63% of organisations with a strong coaching culture report being above their industry peer group revenue compared to all other organisations.

3. Increased Productivity

70% of organisations with a coaching culture have said it has led to them having increased productivity across the business.

4. Improved Change Management

65% of organisations state that they have a higher success rate for change management due to the coaching culture they have created.

These are significant benefits but it’s not enough to tell managers and other leaders to share knowledge at will. Coaching programs require structure to succeed and investment in training to increase leadership capability.

The ICF states from a recent survey that 52% of organisations cited a lack of budget for programs as being a potential obstacle, while 45% cited limited support for coaching among senior leaders.

For your organisation to succeed you need to ensure that there is senior leader buy-in to any initiative, and that it is adequately supported with investment in training of staff – both leaders and team members.

The benefits are huge if you get the necessary sponsorship and investment from senior leaders and as John Maxwell says in his book ‘The 360 Degree Leader’, “Tend to the people, and they will tend to the business.”
